Frequently Asked Questions
- Why use the EarthCure recycling Program?
-
EarthCure is a pioneer in developing zero-emission/green recycling initiatives that both help the environment and protect valuable depleting natural resources. We are specifically engineered to process scrap platinum from medical devices in a way that benefits our clients as well as the community and world as a whole.
- What about packaging/mailing requirements?
- EarthCure covers all shipping costs in every direction. EarthCure's biohazard containers are simple and easy to use, and we will provide them for easy containment of catheters, guide wires, tips, etc. Once full, we will handle pick-up and delivery. At all times, every safety protocol and environmental concern will be addressed.
- Customers may also ship using a padded mailer. If you would prefer to use different packaging, the postage- paid label may be removed from our package and attached to the packaging of your choice, making sure the container is stout and clearly labeled.
- For extra security, you may wish to insure or register your larger, more valuable shipments at the post office. FedEx, DHL, UPS or other express services are also good shipping options. International customers may request a prepaid FedEx packet directly from us.
- When will the shipment be priced?
- The price of platinum fluctuates daily. Normally, we price your shipment at the NY COMEX spot platinum price on the day it arrives here at our facility. Alternative pricing arrangements can be made if you desire.
- How is the value of a shipment of waste determined?
- EP catheters - EP catheter prices vary greatly depending on several factors: number of electrodes, diameter, weight, and platinum content on each electrode. Current prices of some common EP catheters are given on our website.
- Angioplasty Guide wires - Many guide wire types are wound with a platinum wire at the tip (usually the last 2-5 cm). These wires also contain a stainless steel core that needs to be chemically leached away. After chemical treatment, the wires are dried and weighed.
- It may be helpful to note that it takes approximately 80-100 total centimeters of untreated guide wire to equal one gram of leached wire.
- Electrophoresis electrodes – total amount of platinum recovered at spot prices.
- Other platinum scrap – The same process applies.
- How should catheters/guide wires be prepared for shipment?
- When preparing EP catheters for shipment, cut off the end with the electrodes and trim them close to the electrodes.
- Guide wires can be trimmed just above the soldered joint where the platinum tip is attached to the stainless and/or plastic wire.
- Trimming the wires and catheters in this way decreases processing time and makes more efficient use of postage and packaging material.
- What sterilization method should be used?
-
Use whichever method is most convenient for you. Most hospitals use steam or gas or a 28-day disinfectant (e.g. activated dialdehyde). Some customers use a solution of one part sodium hypochlorite (common household bleach) diluted with five parts water.
